The Abandonment Rate is the ratio between the number of abandoned shopping carts and the number of completed orders.

The abandonment rate is measured like this:

Abandoned Shopping Carts
___________________  = Abandoned Rate
(Abandoned Carts + Orders Completed)

For example:

2,500 abandoned shopping carts / (2,500 abandoned shopping carts plus 650 completed orders) = 79.4% Abandoned Rate

Rates vary depending on industry. Typically they range between 50 and 80 percent, with figured being higher for products with lower prices. For example, the Abandoned Rate for cell phone covers would be higher than that for air conditioning units. Most customers will not place a higher-price item in a cart unless they are likely to purchase it, but lower-price items can be driven by impulse.
